Dear Students,

Marcello Russo, Director of the Global MBA, has asked me to make several changes to this year's distance education version of the Management Consulting course, based on requests he has received directly from several students enrolled in the course. As a result of this request, I'm making the following changes:

1) Reduce the emphasis on experiential learning pedagogies and increase the time spent lecturing during class.

2) Slow down and allow more time for student questions.

3) Reduce the reliance on the materials posted to Moodle and YouTube as students have expressed a concern that they don't have enough time to watch or read this content.

4) Add more detailed step-by-step instructions during class time rather than expecting students to get this from the YouTube and Moodle resources.

5) Add more explanation and support for how to work in teams during class time.

As a result of these changes, I'm making the following specific changes to the next class (April 21).

1) I will devote as much time as required next class to answering any questions that students may have about any aspect of the course. If you do not wish to ask your questions directly in a public forum you may email them to me directly at least 24 hours in advance and I'll answer them during class.

2) Instead of each team giving an update on their progress and receiving live feedback from me during class, I am making this strictly optional. Any team that would like to have feedback during class on their work to date may email me their documentation at least 24 hours in advance of the class. I will assess which of these assignments I can review during class with the goal of making my comments and feedback as relevant to the remainder of the class as possible. Since teams will NOT be able to present their work, please try to help me to help you by ensuring that your document can be understood by others without you needing to explain.

3) I will try to give as much developmental feedback to as many teams as possible during whatever time is available during class.

I'll assess any further changes to the course based on how the next class goes, as well as on any feedback that I receive directly from students.

I would like to remind everyone that you may always contact me directly if you have any suggestions for how to improve the course. You do not need to ask others to ask me for a change. I'm pleased to have you co-create your own learning experience (as described in my Statement of Teaching Philosophy posted to Moodle).

I know that there are several more experienced students in the class who have asked me to go faster and/or asked me not to spend time in class discussing how to work in teams and apply project management techniques. I am hoping that these experienced students will help me to help their classmates who may be struggling with the current pace of the class.

I hope that the many on-line resources I have provided will allow these more experienced students to get what they would like out of the course.

See you in class,

Steve
